Among the multiple private jets emerging as competitors in the Very Light Jet (VLJ) market is the Diamond D-Jet. Designed as a 3-passenger aircraft (plus 2 crew seats), the D-Jet is tailored for short- to medium-range missions. Priced at $1.38 million, it targets the owner-operator market, particularly pilots transitioning from piston aircraft to jets. As a result, this entry-level jet is engineered for simplicity, affordability, and ease
The Diamond D-Jet offers straightforward, efficient performance suited to the VLJ category. It has seating for three passengers, a maximum range of 1,350 nautical miles, and a cruise speed of up to 315 KTAS. For longer-range missions, an optimal cruise speed of 240 KTAS is recommended. Furthermore, the aircraft can reach a cruise altitude of 25,000 feet in just 15 minutes. These Diamond D-Jet specifications position it as a highly capable entry-level jet.
In an innovative design decision, Diamond Aircraft limited the D-Jet’s ceiling to 25,000 feet. This choice reduces certification, training, and design costs while enhancing fuel efficiency. In fact, most short- and medium-range flights spend limited time above FL250, and the fuel burn during climb often offsets cruise efficiency at higher altitudes. Therefore, staying below this threshold streamlines the aircraft’s design and improves operational economy.
The D-Jet offers a total internal volume of 165 cubic feet, with a cabin height of 4.5 feet and width of 4.75 feet. It includes 62.9 cubic feet of baggage capacity, distributed between an 18.4 cubic foot internal compartment and two external ones. Additionally, two of the passenger seats can be folded to accommodate cargo. A pending FAA-approved safety feature includes a ballistic parachute system. These cabin-focused Diamond D-Jet specifications make it appealing for both passengers and pilots.
The D-Jet’s fuselage is constructed from carbon fiber composite, offering reduced weight and greater corrosion resistance compared to aluminum competitors. Designed for efficiency and accessibility, the jet has slow approach speeds for shorter runway operations while maintaining a solid climb rate. As such, its balance of performance and simplicity makes it ideal for new jet pilots.
The D-Jet is powered by a single Williams FJ33 engine, equipped with a FADEC system that automatically optimizes engine performance throughout flight. Its cockpit features Garmin G1000 avionics—a suite also found on the Citation Mustang and Phenom 100—with two 12-inch primary flight displays and a 15-inch multi-function display. Consequently, the modern avionics layout supports the aircraft’s user-friendly Diamond D-Jet specifications.
Diamond Aircraft completed its second D-Jet in mid-2007, and the aircraft has since undergone flight testing. FAA certification was anticipated in the second quarter of 2008, with pre-orders already being accepted. Ultimately, the D-Jet represents Diamond Aircraft’s commitment to making jet ownership more attainable through intelligent design and performance-driven engineering.
